My Experience as an Intern at the CAMTech Uganda Co-Creation Lab

Tumwesigye Habert is part of the June-July Cohort Internship Program at CAMTech Uganda. He is a student of biomedical engineering, holds a diploma in science laboratory technology and received a certificate in science laboratory technology from Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).

My interest in innovation and biomedical engineering is to apply engineering principles and design concepts to medicine for healthcare purposes, like diagnostics and treatments and innovations that solve health-related challenges that affect middle-income countries.

When I first read an email from Ms. Nambogo Nuriat in June 2018, it congratulated me and informed me that I was one of the successful students accepted for the June-July Cohort Internship Program at CAMTech Uganda. This made me very excited because this was the only organization I was eyeing to achieve my goals of innovation and research to support my career in biomedical engineering.

We started the internship on 4 June 2018 and were welcomed by Ms. Nambogo Nuriat. Most of the first three weeks were spent at the CAMTech Uganda Co-Creation Lab. In the first and second week, we were introduced to CAMTech Uganda, completed a problem identification using a problem tree analysis, discussed team dynamics and team formation, collected challenges from the community in our respective teams and began concept writing. In the third week, we had a scientific writing workshop where we gained knowledge and skills in problem statement writing, concept writing, methodology and how to use Endnote for references.

During the Internship Program at CAMTech Uganda, I hope to get knowledge and skills in identification of a problem and how to analyze it, as well as develop my skills in research proposal writing, grant writing, scientific writing, concept writing skills and how to ideate and develop a prototype and business model. CAMTech Uganda is a place I highly recommend to any student wishing to enter into the world of innovations and research. It offers holistic training towards innovation and research. The program also has a committed staff who are always available to make interns get the most out of the program.

Do you have an idea to improve global health?
